“FLIP THE BANNER” SYRACUSE FOOTBALL TRADITION AT VARSITY BEGAN WITH COACH DICK MACPHERSON AND VARSITY’S SPEROS DELLAS. As reported by the Athletic in the NY Times, “The tradition began in 1981, according to the Varsity, when Syracuse football coach Dick MacPherson and Varsity co-owner Speros Dellas came up with the idea of hanging pennants for each of Syracuse’s opponents on the wall — and having the game’s MVP climb on a ladder and flip it over after the game. The tradition eventually changed to members of the marching band doing the actual flipping.” Read more…

Syracuse N.Y. — Few things are as linked by tradition and history as Syracuse University and the Varsity Pizza shop in the Marshall Street area. The relationship is now even stronger: SU last month bought a strip of four commercial properties on South Crouse Avenue that includes the Varsity, Faegan’s Pub and other retail and commercial spaces.
